We all dread purchasing car keys. Since the addition of transponder chips in keys, they have become more expensive. The days of visiting the hardware store for a spare $2.50 car key are long gone.
In 1996 Ford began manufacturing vehicles with immobilizer systems which required transponder keys. Since that time, most every car on the road has a transponder in the key. How does a transponder work? The car is equipped with an immobilizer system. The immobilizer has an antenna which encircles the ignition key hole. When the key is inserted into the ignition, the immobilizer energizes the transponder chip in the key and reads the chip information. If the information is correct, the immobilizer then informs the car's computer that it is alright to start the car.
At the dealership, these keys can be quite expensive. Prices range between $250 and $1,700 just for a spare. If you have lost all keys, the price can go even higher.
